The Safe Sisters Circle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free culturally specific, holistic, and trauma-based services to Black women survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault primarily living in Washington, DC's Wards 7 and 8.

Domestic Violence Survivor

Black Women and Gender-Based Violence

Black women have a complicated historical and contemporary relationship with domestic violence and sexual abuse within the United States going back to slavery and resulting in both economic disadvantages and the denial of sexual abuse and domestic violence victimhood.

Poverty Connection

There is a complex interconnectedness between poverty and sexual violence where women living below the poverty line are exposed to more risk factors that lead to increased rates of sexual and domestic violence.  27.7% of Black women live below the poverty line, putting them at the highest poverty rate among women living in the United States and making them more vulnerable to gender-based violence.

Washington DC's Wards 7 and 8

Comprised of neighborhoods “East of the River”, Wards 7 and 8 of Washington DC are predominantly comprised of Black communities whose residents deal daily with the struggles of violence and poverty.
